God At Work In All Seasons

August 25 2015

Tatum Norman | Co-Lead Pastor | Citizens Church | Redlands, CA

It’s August and the season is about to change – though let me be honest here, in southern California we don’t see much change physically. It goes from burning hot to hot, and from brown to not so brown, yet the calendar tells us that a new season is about to begin. I am currently prepping to home school our 3 kids this year and have a family of 5 staying with us until they can move into their new house. We are a year and half into a church plant and I couldn’t be more excited about all that God has in store. I am one of those people who thrives on change, action and adventure. Some of you are feeling stressed just reading this!

I don’t know what season you are in right now…for some of you the church is full, your marriage is amazing, your kids are walking with the Lord and things just couldn’t be better. Others of you are in a season where ministry is hard and you feel like you’re pushing a boulder up a large hill. Maybe you’re dealing with a difficult personal season of heartache, illness, a broken relationship, or loss.  I have experienced all of the above, just in the last 4 years – for real!

I want to remind you today that through all the seasons, God is working in you and He is working through you.  Sometimes in ministry we get caught up in the knowledge that God is working through us, and He is, but He is also working in us. “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13). He loves us too much to leave us as we are and He never wastes a season.  He uses all the seasons we go through to “make us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image” (2 Cor. 3:18). I am so thankful for that!

He also is working through us. You have to breathe in but you also have to breathe out, right?  Have you ever read about the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your body? A lot happens when you breathe in and out.

You can’t just do one and not the other. God doesn’t do all of this incredible work in you for those lessons to just sit there in the recesses of your heart and mind. He wants to get the word out! Your life is a story being read by everyone around you. Our kids, our neighbors, our friends, those at the grocery store; eyes are on you and people are reading your story. God is using your life and some days you might not even know it. In your best of days and in your worst of days He’s working through you.

God uses every season.  Some seasons He’s working in us more and some seasons He’s working through us more. But no matter what season you’re in, don’t lose heart. You are an ambassador to the world of the greatest hope ever given to mankind, “go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone” (Mark 16:15). You have been given the opportunity to leave a mark on humanity: to love those that are deemed unlovable, to give hope to the hopeless, to bind up the wounds of the brokenhearted. “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news of peace and salvation” (Is. 52:7). The best part is you’re not in it alone “for the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you” (Deut. 31:6). This is a divine calling that God has placed on your life; a calling to move through seasons knowing God is at work.
