Joy is defined as – a feeling of great pleasure and happiness.
People are always looking for joy. People want to be happy and feel pleasure, but are not always sure how to get it, how to live it out in their lives.
Well Psalm 119:1- 16 tells us how to be joyful. See if you can figure it out.
1 Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord.
2 Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts.
3 They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in his paths.
4 You have charged us to keep your commandments carefully.
5 Oh, that my actions would consistently reflect your decrees!
6 Then I will not be ashamed when I compare my life with your commands.
7 As I learn your righteous regulations, I will thank you by living as I should!
8 I will obey your decrees. Please don’t give up on me!
9 How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.
10 I have tried hard to find you, don’t let me wander from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
12 I praise you, O Lord; teach me your decrees.
13 I have recited aloud all the regulations you have given us.
14 I have rejoiced in your laws as much as in riches.
15 I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.
16 I will delight in your decrees and not forget your word.
Did you figure it out? As we live a life of obedience to God, His Word and His ways, we will live a joyful life.
I know it is much easier said than done. A lot of times I feel like Paul when He said in Romans 7:21-28:
21 I have discovered this principle of life, that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
So today I am not going to focus on the rest of my life, I am going to focus on doing what God wants me to do TODAY. And if I mess up (which I probably will) I will not stop. I will just keeping listening to the voice of God and walking in obedience. And I believe that as I am obedient I will be joyful. According to Psalm 119, joy is a by-product of obedience.
And then tomorrow I will read God’s word, listen to His voice and obey what He says and joy will come.
And as I do that everyday my days and my holidays will be filled with JOY.
