Love in the Details

I recently had the opportunity to speak at a chapel service in a home for at-risk girls in Nashville, Tennessee. I was there to give my testimony, answer some of their questions, and encourage them as best I could. Before the service began, one of the ladies on staff took me on a tour, and I was amazed at how they had truly created a warm, personal home, not just a clinical facility, for these girls.

I was overwhelmed to see their rooms, some without pictures of their families or really anything personal, lavished with a beautiful comforter on the bed with bright pillows, clean paint on the walls, and carefully chosen decorations to brighten the space. I remember telling my guide how much I loved the cozy environment they had created. She smiled and said, “There is love in the details.”

The truth of her statement echoed in my heart. When people experience excellence in what we say and do, they feel valued and loved, which in turn opens their heart to God. Later reflecting on my visit, I was reminded of this Scripture:

“Arise, shine; For your light has come!  And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.  For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you.  The Gentiles (the lost) shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes all around, and see: They all gather together, they come to you; Your sons shall come from afar, And your daughters shall be nursed at your side. Then you shall see and become radiant, And your heart shall swell with joy.” Isaiah 60:1-5 NKJV

A more modern way of saying arise and shine is “stand up and stand out.” Everyone around us responds to excellence. If we want to be a light in a dark world and positively attract the attention of other people, we have to demonstrate a spirit of excellence consistently. Other people around you may not read the Bible, but they are always reading you!

With this commitment to excellence in mind, I strive to show God’s love in the details of everything I do. For example, I’m privileged to coordinate our women’s conference each year, and our team works very hard to create a welcoming, peaceful, refreshing environment from the moment the ladies drive onto the property to the moment they leave. From signs along the driveway declaring who they are in Christ to scented soaps in their bathrooms to the fireworks at our After Party, we strive for every single detail to reflect quality and grace. And the ladies notice. I’m always amazed to hear them share what specifically touched them during the conference. Little things like the journal they received as a gift, a specific speaker who inspired them, the greeter who smiled at them, and the warm décor that made them feel at home.

Where there is excellence, there is peace. Where there is peace, there is a wide open heart for God to touch. Yes, there is love in the details.
