Social Media

August 30 2014

I have a love-hate relationship with social media. I consider myself a social person. I love connecting with people and I really love looking at pictures. I love seeing old friends and their families. I love seeing what people are doing in their businesses and great things going on in churches. What I don’t love is self-promotion. You know…the ones that Instagram, Facebook and tweet every hour on the hour about……well…..THEM! I tell my daughters that people never post a bad picture of themselves or post something that didn’t quite work. It’s the best of the best. Pictures at the most amazing events with the most beautiful people eating the most delicious food and you weren’t invited! It’s used as a way to show the best of the best. I’ve done it. We all have but we have to guard our hearts.

People de-friend their friends because of jealousy or offense. Their “friend” hosted a shower over at their house and  they weren’t invited so they de-friend them and then creep on them through other friends social media. You know what I’m talking about!!! You have to guard your heart. If it takes you getting off social media and being out of touch for a while….do it. The Bible says to guard your heart with ALL diligence because out of it flows the issues of life. You are responsible for that. If things or people mess with you, deal with it and guard your heart. I can’t watch scary movies or commercials about scary things. Others live to watch them. I have to guard my heart and not watch them. I know myself. It messes with me. If you deal with jealousy, you have to REALLY watch what you allow into your life through social media. Don’t go on Instagram to figure out who were the chosen in the picture to attend and why were you left out. Maybe it’s not about you! This can cause you to become self-absorbed. It happens to the best of the best. I know women in ministry that their identity is caught up on which big name preachers are following them. No one is excluded from this torment. High school kids are caught up in how many likes they get on Instagram. Their popularity is tied to how many likes they get. What are we teaching them?

I believe that social media is one of the best inventions on the planet. It’s like most things. Do you have control of it or does it control you? It can be used to spread the best and the worst! You can’t control others but you can control how you handle it. Guard your heart. Your life and happiness depends on it!

Happy tweeting,
