How do you handle criticism?

If I receive negative criticism, it can be easy to go into a space of being defensive and feeling angry and hurt, especially when it comes from someone I care for or respect. But I have learned through those few experiences that my worth does not come from a human’s perspective; it comes from our amazing Father above. His words and what He thinks of me have the final say in who I am. As for positive criticism, I am always open to growth and improvement.

What makes you interesting and unique?

I believe my experiences in life and how God has used those experiences for His kingdom are what make me interesting and unique. When I think about my journey, I recall how my parents immigrated to New York City from the Dominican Republic, not knowing how to speak English, so they could provide a better place for their seven kids. I think about how my husband and I have been faithfully married for 26 years, have three beautiful children, and how we have been taking care of our 18-year-old son, who is severely disabled and our greatest blessing. I think about when I lost my mother, who was my closest friend, to cancer when I was 33 years old and still chose joy.

My husband and I have been in ministry for 23 years and still love each other and the church. We traveled across the country from the East Coast to the West Coast to plant Luminous City Church and celebrated our first anniversary during COVID-19. Through the little things and big things in life, God’s love and grace are what make me interesting and unique.

How would you describe your hopes and desires for your life?

My greatest hope is that my children, their children, and their children’s children would always know that God loves them. My desire is that no matter what season of life they are in, they know that God is faithful to His promises and would never leave them nor forsake them.
